Natural wetlands and urban stormwater: potential impacts and management

Using ecological systems for alternative stormwater management (paper, US)
Discussion of how natural wetlands alter stormwater quality. This occurs de facto when natural wetlands are downstream of urban areas. Often the impacts are not managed, and the urban areas drive decline in natural wetlands. There is scope for a more holistic approach, in which natural wetlands functioning is maintained, even though pressures on them are increased. When this occurs, natural wetlands are, in fact, part of an urban stormwater 'treatment train'.
