What is an estuary? (DIPNR)
Types of estuaries
- Embayments and Drowned River Valleys (e.g. Broken Bay)
- Wave Dominated Estuaries (e.g. Tuggerah Lakes)
- Wave Dominated Deltas (e.g. Richmond River)
- Coastal Lagoons and Strandplain associated creeks (e.g. Terrigal Lagoon)
- Tide-dominated Estuaries (e.g. Botany Bay)
- Tide-dominated Deltas (e.g. Burdekin River, QLD)
- Tidal Creeks (e.g. Barker Inlet, SA)

Discharges to Estuaries
"Pollutants enter an estuary from a variety of sources, which can be divided into two categories—diffuse and point sources. Diffuse source pollution is probably the chief cause of water quality degradation in terms of organic matter, suspended solids, nutrients and chemical contaminants. Diffuse sources include run-off from urban, agricultural and forestry land, mine sites, landfill and other contaminated sites."
